ROYAL ASCOT STYLE GUIDE 2022

Ladies Royal Ascot hats

The weather may still be freezing – despite a few lovely days – but we’re already planning our summer outfits for those special occasions.

And one of the biggest events of the year will be Royal Ascot, which is always one of our busiest times here at the Simply Devine Hat Shop. This year the event takes place from 14-18th June, with Ladies Day on Thursday 16th, but it’s never too early to plan your outfit.  The shops are already full of vibrant colours and summer styles.

However, Royal Ascot has a very particular dress code especially in the Royal Enclosure – including the size of ladies’ hats.   Headpieces which have a solid base offour inches (10cm) or more in diameter are acceptable as an alternative to a full hat, but fascinators are not permitted. Novelty hats – ones which are excessively oversized or promote any brand or product – are also not permitted. Girls up to the age of 17, however, may wear fascinators.

As for dresses – straps must be at least one inch wide, with no halter necks, no spaghetti straps, no off the shoulders or Bardot necklines. Midriffs must be covered.

Dresses and skirts should be of “modest length” defined as falling just above the knee or longer. Jackets and pashminas may be worn if the weather is a little chilly, but tops and dresses underneath should still comply with the Royal Enclosure Dress Code, though the Village and Windsor Enclosures have less restrictions on dress.

Trouser suits are allowed, though they should be full-length to the ankle and of matching material and colour – so no separates. Jumpsuits are welcome. They should fall below the knee, with regulations matching that for dresses.

One thing is for sure, it’s a great event for fashion and people watching, whichever enclosure you are in. And here’s one of our own favourite designs from our own Simply Devine Hats collection for Royal Ascot this year……
